Bring back Muldoon’s approach to gangs – plea

Those who work with hard-to-reach communities say the Government’s proposed gang laws are built on a foundation of moral panic, and will not address the causes of gang formation, or the violent or dysfunctional behaviour.
They advocate for an intervention, rather than suppression, approach – referring to former Prime Minister Rob Muldoon, who implemented a ‘carrot-and-stick’ system with gangs that included work schemes and pro-social activities like rugby league.
